John grew up around cars, watching his dad, Al, build cars, and having his dad quiz him about every car's make and year-now that's becoming immersed in a hobby at an early age.inline_mediumwraptextright00As any good hot rodder would do, the engine's performance was stepped up via a Schneider cam, an Offy intake, a trio of Rochester two-barrel carbs, and Edmunds air cleaners. In just eight short months, our '65 Cutlass project car has gone from vegetating on grandma's driveway to pulling major g's around Road America. In just eight short months, our '65 Cutlass project car has gone from vegetating on grandma's driveway to pulling major g's around Road America. During that time, it's blossomed from a mushy, wimpy conglomerate of decrepit OE parts into a cutting-edge Pro Touring machine poised to grip it up at autocross events and road courses throughout the country. During one glorious weekend in May, we did just that. As Brent Jarvis and company at Performance Restorations (www.PerformanceRestorations.com) were putting the finishing touches on Project Olds, car owner/photographer Robert McGaffin decided to give it a proper shakedown thrashing at the Optima Ultimate Street Car Faceoff at Road America. It proved to be one heck of a maiden voyage, as the event pitted 40 wicked g-Machines against each other in an automotive triathlon featuring timed hot laps around Road America's famed 4.048-mile road course, an autocross shootout, and a braking competition. Although the excursion revealed several bugs that need to be ironed out, Project Olds performed remarkably well overall.inline_mediumwraptextright0033893754/tech/1009phr_1965_olds_cutlass_project_car1009phr_01_o+65_cutlass_project_car+road_test.jpgtrue Photo Gallery: '65 Olds Cutlass Project Car - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine

Now it's time to move on to the second act of Project Olds' powertrain shuffle by ripping out the miserable two-speed slush box for a complete five-speed swap kit from Hurst Driveline Conversions.Without even realizing it, we'd built a domestic ricer. Replete with a sweet stance, big wheels, gooey meats, and a cutting-edge suspension, our '65 Cutlass project car certainly looked the part of the quintessential g-Machine, but fell three gears and 300 hp short of being the real deal. With the help of the School of Automotive Machinists, we embarked upon addressing the power shortage last month by putting the finishing touches on a 514hp big-block. Now it's time to move on to the second act of Project Olds' powertrain shuffle by ripping out the miserable two-speed slush box for a complete five-speed swap kit from Hurst Driveline Conversions. This comprehensive setup includes every last nut and bolt necessary to install a Tremec TKO transmission into a GM A-body, and any monkey with a wrench should be able to knock out the install over a weekend.inline_mediumwraptextright00We'll spare you with the details on how to pull a 330 small-block and a two-speed trans out of a '65 Cutlass, but suffice it to say that they both came out in one fell swoop, and we were glad to see them go. Upon measuring the dimensions of the small-block next to the big-block, Jarvis realized that both are very similar in size, so he decided to use small-block motor mounts to bolt the 461 in position.29569567/tech/1007phr_tremec_tko_transmission1007phr_04_o+tremec_tko_transmission+330_small_block.jpgtrue Photo Gallery: Tremec TKO Transmission - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine

For the typical street/strip motor, hot rodders have been aspiring to match towering horsepower peaks with excellent low and midrange torque for decades. For the typical street/strip motor, hot rodders have been aspiring to match towering horsepower peaks with excellent low and midrange torque for decades. Get that curve flat enough, and you've got yourself a broad and flexible torque plateau opposed to a narrow and finicky peak, which aptly describes the performance of the 461ci big-block Olds we recently built for our '65 Cutlass project car. While its 514 hp is more respectable than delectable, the Olds' maximum torque output of 540 lb-ft-which extends from 4,100 to 4,600 rpm-is both remarkably stout and astoundingly flat. Furthermore, the big-block Olds kicks out 494 lb-ft at just 3,000 rpm, and averages over 500 lb-ft throughout its entire operating range of 3,000 to 6,000 rpm. Sure, it's not terribly difficult to eclipse 500 hp with a run-of-the-mill small-block Chevy in the current era of easy horsepower, but it's the gobs of twisty stuff-and how cheap and easy it is to attain-that sets this 461 Olds apart from the pack.inline_mediumwraptextright0033320319/tech/1006phr_1965_oldsmobile_cutlass_project_car1006phr_01_z+1965_oldsmobile_cutlass_project_car+engine.jpgtrue Photo Gallery: 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass Project Car - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine

We're car guys and gals (why would you be reading Rod & Custom if you weren't?!) and that means we probably buy and sell more cars than most people, as there's always something else we want to own. While this provides us with countless "the one that got away" stories and a good many other tales to tell of the great cars we had and times we had with them, it can often lead us to wishing we still had one or two of them now.inline_mediumwraptextright0028596436/featuredvehicles/1006rc_1957_oldsmobile_rocket_88rodp_1006_01_o+1957_oldsmobile_rocket_88+front_left.jpgtrue Photo Gallery: 1957 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 - Rod & Custom Magazine

In April 1952, Boeing first flew the Stratofortress that would soon be best known by its service designation-the B-52. Now nearly six decades later, the bomber is still in service and flown by USAF pilots who are younger than the planes themselves, the last of which rolled off the assembly line in 1962.inline_mediumwraptextrightIf your GM car is already fitted with a set of single-piston, floating caliper disc brakes, then this conversion is a simple bolt-on. With our modifications, braking performance should be excellent. Plus, a set of Wilwood calipers showing through the spokes adds major style points.27023336/techarticles/ccrp_1005_wilwood_d52cb_caliper_brakes_installccrp_1005_01_+wilwood_brake_conversion+wilwood_brakes.jpgTrue Photo Gallery: Wilwood D52CB Caliper Brakes Install - Car Craft Magazine

Brand loyalty runs deep, but it's hard to deny that the other guys make some good stuff from time to time. Why else would hot rodders bolt Ford rearends beneath Chevys, GM transmissions behind Ford engines, and Chrysler Hemis into AMCs?Brand loyalty runs deep, but it's hard to deny that the other guys make some good stuff from time to time. Why else would hot rodders bolt Ford rearends beneath Chevys, GM transmissions behind Ford engines, and Chrysler Hemis into AMCs? With all due respect to the competent GM 12-bolt and legendary Ford 9-inch, Chrysler's Dana 60 is the mother of all rearends. This absurdly robust driveline specimen was originally designed for heavy-duty military vehicles during World War II, and was adapted for street combat in the '60s by Chrysler to endure the fury unleashed by its Hemi- and 440-powered muscle cars. We're currently busy putting the finishing touches on a built 455 big-block for our '65 Olds Cutlass project car, but its projected 500 hp is respectable rather than incredible. As such, our original plans called for replacing the factory 10-bolt rearend with a 12-bolt, but when Strange informed us that it offers a big-inch Dana 60 for GM A-bodies, we were more than intrigued.inline_mediumwraptextright0028715653/tech/1005phr_1965_oldsmobile_cutlass_strange_s60_rearend_install1005phr_01_z+1965_oldsmobile_cutlass_moar_please+project_olds.jpgtrue Photo Gallery: 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass Strange S60 Rearend Install - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine
